10 Things to Know Before Your First Dubai Trip

Dubai is the most popular international destination we book from Nigeria, and for good reason: it is close, glamorous and packed with things to do. But first-timers make the same handful of avoidable mistakes. Here is what we tell every client before their first trip.

Sort your visa before anything else

Your Dubai e-visa typically takes three to five working days, but allow two weeks in peak season. Do not buy non-refundable extras until the visa is approved — your approval PDF must also be carried (printed or on your phone) for airline check-in in Lagos.

Timing is everything

November to March is glorious — warm days, cool evenings, perfect for desert safaris. June to August is seriously hot, with temperatures above 40°C, though hotel prices drop sharply and everything indoors is air-conditioned. December is peak season: book flights and hotels at least six weeks out.

Budget beyond the ticket

Plan for attractions (Burj Khalifa, desert safari and theme parks add up), transport (the Metro is excellent and cheap; taxis are metered and safe) and food, which ranges from ₦3,000 shawarma to eye-watering fine dining. A prepaid Nol card handles all public transport.

Know the etiquette

Dubai is cosmopolitan but respectful dress is expected in malls and public buildings — beachwear stays at the beach and pool. Public displays of affection are best kept modest, and during Ramadan, eat and drink in designated areas during daylight hours.

Book the big experiences ahead

Desert safaris, Burj Khalifa sunset slots and popular brunches sell out. Booking through your travel consultant before departure is almost always cheaper than hotel-lobby prices, and you avoid wasting precious holiday hours arranging logistics. Pack sunscreen, comfortable shoes and space in your suitcase — the shopping will happen whether you plan it or not.
